Kayleigh & Rommel Christmas 2006
New memories and good times to come.
Puppy & Kayleigh
June 2009
Believe it or not "Kids for K9sTM" was created by 6 year old Kayleigh. Her dad is a police officer and had to do some training with his department's K9 teams and knew Kayleigh wouldn't want to miss that. So like a good dad he called her with the news. (One of the benefits to homeschooling is that we can take a field trip at a moments notice.) So off we went in the cold. Kayleigh watched with such intent as the dogs worked with their handlers. Getting her out of there was not easy but she still had school work to finish. Upon arriving home she made a lapbook with pictures of police dogs and why they are heroes. In the process she noticed a vest on one of the dogs and asked what it was. I explained that it was a ballistic vest to protect the dog. Then she noticed in another picture the dog did not have one. So I explained to her that the police departments do not provide ballistic vests for the dogs only their human partners. This was totally unacceptable to her and she flat out said "I want to get a vest for the dog, I want to protect them like Rommel use to protect me." I explained to her the cost was very high, she said she did not care and asked how she could raise the money. Aunt Beth said she could sell her unwanted toys. Kayleigh said ok and took it a step further by selling some of her favorite toys. So here we are today asking for help to continue Kayleigh's mission to make sure every K9 has the equipment that could save his life.
How you can help.
1) Spread the word.
2) Support a fundraising event.
3) Buy one of her really cool t-shirts.
4) Donate monetarily.
5) Become a sponsor.

Newport News Sheriffs Office Vest Donation
Kayleigh donated her 4th vest tonight to Cpl. W.
Hill and K-9 Vader. Mayor Frank gave a wonderful speech about Kayleigh.
Thank you to Channel WVEC TV 13 News, WTKR TV 3 News and Newport News
TV for coming out and covering the story. The more publicity we get the
more K-9s we can help.

Virginia Police Work Dog Association Banquet
Thank you to the VPWDA for allowing "Kids for K9sTM" to attend your event. Because of
the generous attendees of your event we left the event almost completely
sold out of BOTH t-shirts and car decals. Kayleigh was able to also
donate a ballistic vest to the Chowan County Sheriffs Dept. in NC the
recipients were Deputy Bassnight & K-9 Rico. That night Kayleigh
was able to play ball with K-9 Vader of the Newport News Sheriffs Dept
who would be the next recipient of a ballistic vest. Thank you again to
all who supported us and we appreciate everything you do to keep our
communities safe.

Chick-fil-A had a public
safety night and invited "Kids for K9sTM"
to come out. We had a great time and raised more funds for purchasing
more life safety equipment. We were also able to educate the community
on the type of life saving equipment these dogs are lacking unless we
help them.
THANKS Chick-fil-A!!!!!!

Kayleigh took "Kids for K9sTM" to
Greenbelt, Maryland for the United States Police Canine Association,
Region 3's PD1 Trials. At the conclusion of the days events, Kayleigh
would draw a name from a hat and that K-9 handler would be awarded a
ballistic vest for their K-9 partner.
The weather wasn't the greatest, at times we had sunshine but it was
quickly replaced by a fast moving thunderstorm. None of that
discouraged Kayleigh. She still worked hard at selling her t-shirts,
passing out her business cards and talking to the K-9 handlers about her
organization.
Then the time came for her to draw the name. The winners of "Kid's for
K-9'sTM" first ballistic vest were
Greenbelt Police Officer B. Byers and his K-9, Leon.
